HS ~ Letter to Parents

October 2, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This letter is to inform you that one of our students brought a handgun to school on Friday. Our school is committed to the safety and education of all our students. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise.

The school received a call in the afternoon of a possible gun on campus. The student involved was questioned. At no time was the gun brought out at school or used to threaten other students.

Campus administration, working with both the SRO and HPD, we were able to bring this situation to a quick close. The superintendent was notified of the ongoing situation. This was a violation of law; criminal charges will be brought in addition to school imposed disciplinary measures. The student involved will be subject to school board policy and appropriate laws that govern weapons on school grounds.

Please discuss this incident with your children and emphasize that it is against the law to bring weapons of any type to school. Also, please emphasize the importance of sharing the information with you or a staff member, if they hear or know of a weapon at school. In this way, we are all working together to keep our school safe.

Please feel free to call me at 409-316-6544 or email me at lgilcrease@hitchcockisd.org if you have any questions or concerns.
