Principal Monthly Message

September 2017

Welcome to a New School Year at Hitchcock Primary School.

I am excited to welcome you to the 2017 -2018 school year.  It is an honor and privilege to serve as the principal of Hitchcock Primary School.  As we prepare to embark on a new year, I would like to acknowledge the significant impact Harvey has had on our entire school and community.  We are here to assist with any needs you and your family may have.  Please contact me if you have questions any on how we can assist your family. I would like you know that my door is always open.

Below are parent suggestions for helping children in the midst of the Harvey crisis:

1.   Limit the time your children watch news coverage of the event.  Visual images of disaster can be very frightening to children.  If they are watching, talk about what you see and correct their misunderstandings.  Let them ask questions.  Reassure them.  Then take a break from TV as soon as possible.

2.   Keep routines (mealtimes, bedtime, etc.) and expectations of behavior as close to normal as possible to give them stability and sense that some of life is still predictable.  They want you to keep being you.

3.   Be honest answering questions.  Keep answers simple without giving more information that what the child needs at the time.  Do not avoid words like dangerous, death, disaster…they have heard them and know they exist.  Just put those words in the context of safety, hope, resilience and assure them that they have more life and good things ahead.

4.   Help your children know you have some of the same feelings they have.  Let them know that everyone experiences pain, anger, and anxiety, but we can handle feelings in healthy ways and keep our faith and hope in all midst of them.

5.   Assure them of your love and presence.  Reassure them that you will keep them safe.

6.   Let them be “clingy” or more dependent on you for the next few months if necessary.  Slowly guide them back to the appropriate level of independence.

7.   Have quiet family time together every day to play and to talk.  It will be good for all of you.

8.   Tell them how to take good care of themselves during times like these: eating healthy, resting, drinking water, getting sunshine, focusing on blessings.

9.   Give them small tasks to do to help the “family team.”  Just remember they may not follow directions as well as usual.

Our staff of highly qualified professional educators and support personnel is committed to providing our students many opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. We invite and encourage students and parents to work in partnership with us to seize opportunities that make a positive impact on our children.

Please know that we highly value home/school communication here at Hitchcock Primary.  It is vital and plays an integral role in each student’s success.  We encourage you to contact us if/when the need arises, and to stay in the know about your child’s studies, assignments, assessments, and school activities, as well as other events and happenings. Volunteering to work in the classroom, chaperoning field trips, joining PTO, or simply encouraging your child to do his or her best in class each day are just a few of the ways you can make a positive impact on our children.  Our dedicated faculty and staff are here to meet the needs of your children throughout the school year.

I am truly excited about the school year.  Feel free to contact me at any time as I welcome your thoughts, comments or concerns. I look forward to a productive and successful school year as we work together for our students’ success.
